Kennen Sie den Zustand, etwas gesehen zu haben, das sich erst in seiner Abwesenheit offenbart? — Chad Burts Werke ergreifen, lösen Staunen aus und lassen wie in Platons Höhlengleichnis erzählt, die Darsteller hinter den Schatten erkennen.
Malerei ist der Ausgangspunkt für Burts Arbeiten. Ebenso bedient er sich installativen Ansätzen und stellt den Bildern oft Objekte gegenüber, welche in teilweise selbstreferenzieller Beziehung stehen. So etwa in der Arbeit ‹Bkr Strt› welche aus dem Gemälde ‹An incarnation of Gerry Rafferty appears above Baker Street…› und dem Audio-Objekt ‹Baker Street Oracle› besteht. Chad Burt ist ein Erzähler der seine Geschichten und deren Darsteller mit sich selbst kommunizieren lässt.
Burts Bilder und Installationen beherbergen ikonografische Bezüge und narrativ-romantische Ansätze mit sehnsüchtigen, unheimlichen und mystischen Elementen. Durch den Ausbau des Besonderen zum Allgemeinen und umgekehrt, isoliert er ein wesentliches Element der Fiktion, bekannt aus der Welt der Comics, und macht es zum Mittelpunkt seiner Suche und Analyse. Chad Burts Werk formt aus Banalem Übersinnliches, lässt Ernst in Komik umschlagen und mischt Geplantes mit Zufälligem. Ambivalenz und Metapher sind bei seinen Arbeiten charakteristisch.
In den thematischen Wiederholungen referenziert Burt Orte der Manipulation, wie z. B. Theater, Museen, Einkaufszentren und heilige Stätten. Das Transzendente, für unsere Sinne nicht Erfassbare bildet einen roten Faden durch sein Schaffen. Es geht im Gesehenen nicht darum, etwas zu verstehen, sondern darum, etwas zu erfahren.
Vielleicht können Betrachtende dank Burts vorhandenem Humor in eine nicht-didaktische Beziehung mit seinen Kunstwerken treten und die alltägliche Rationalität für einen Augenblick vergessen. – Tomas Germann
Chad Burt, 1978 in Digby, Nova Scotia (Kanada) geboren, lebt und arbeitet in London. Er studierte Bildende Kunst an der Mount Allison University, New Brunswick (Kanada) und absolviert zurzeit den MA in Fine Arts am Goldsmiths, University of London (UK).

Have you ever seen anything that reveals itself only through its absence? – Chad Burt’s works seize the viewer, evoke astonishment, and, as recounted in Plato’s allegory of the cave, allow us to recognize the protagonists behind the shadows.
Burt’s oeuvre starts out with painting, involves an installation-like approach, and often interrelates image and object in a partly self-referential manner. One such example is ‹Bkr Strt›, a work composed of a painting entitled ‹An incarnation of Gerry Rafferty appears above Baker Street…› and the audio-object ‹Baker Street Oracle›. Chad Burt allows his stories and their protagonists to communicate both among and with themselves.
Burt’s paintings and installations include iconographic references and narrative-romantic approaches involving wistful, uncanny, and mystical elements. By expanding the particular into the general, and vice versa, he isolates an essential element of fiction, well known from the world of comic strips, and places it at the centre of his quest and analysis. Chad Burt shapes the extrasensory from the banal, allows the serious to keel over into the comic, and blends the premeditated with the coincidental. The quintessential characteristics of his work are ambivalence and metaphor.
Burt’s thematic repetitions point to the sites of manipulation, such as the theatre, museums, shopping centres, and sacred places. The theme running through his work is the transcendental, indeed that which eludes our senses. Experience rather than understanding is crucial to what meets the eye in these works.
Perhaps Burt’s humour allows viewers to enter into a non-didactic relationship with his art, and perhaps it also affords us a welcome opportunity to forget everyday rationality and common sense for a moment. – Tomas Germann
