A Possibly Discredited Theory, and Thus a Paradise Less› ankündigen zu dürfen.
Antichthon (griech. Gegenerde) ist ein, 500 v. Chr. erstmals beschriebener, hypothetischer Himmelskörper. Der griechische Philosoph Philolaos führte diese Idee ein, um das damals propagierte Weltbild in Balance zu halten. Über die Jahrtausende wurde die umstrittene Vorstellung der Gegenerde mehrfach korrigiert.
Für Christian Waldvogel steht Antichthon für das periodische Kommen und Vergehen von Weltanschauungen, für das Fallenlassen von Theorien, das Verwerfen von Ideen und sich verändernde Überzeugungen, einhergehend mit dem Verlust des Paradieses. Vor 2500 Jahren stellte man sich Antichthon opulent, ideal und fruchtbar vor. Vieles davon ist im Lauf der Zeit überflüssig geworden. Wenn Antichthon denn existiert, dann höchstens in der Grösse eines Asteroiden. Damit schrumpft der Paradiesgarten zu einem lebens-, luft- und vegetationslosen Gesteinsbrocken.
Christian Waldvogels raum- und medienübergreifend angelegte Installation ‹Antichthon — A Possibly Discredited Theory, and Thus a Paradise Less› eröffnet den Betrachtenden ein Environment aus Versuchsanordnungen, Objekten, Projektionen und Bildern. Die Videoarbeit ‹contre-jour› (2012) bildet die Schleuse zwischen Erde und Gegenerde. Das Video zeigt die auf Spitzbergen aufgenommene, nie untergehende Sonne. Der Blick ist ununterbrochen gegen die Sonne gerichtet, die uns seit Menschengedenken den vermeintlichen Standort von Antichthon verdeckt. Es entsteht eine räumliche und assoziative Trennung die den Fokus von einer entfernten Aussensicht auf die in greifbarer Nähe befindlichen Details zoomt.
«Ich versuche den Dingen auf den Grund zu gehen und so den Kern der Sache — Ideallösungen — zu finden, seien diese künstlerischer, konzeptioneller oder mathematischer Art. Mich interessiert der Blick aufs Ganze, und eben das, was grösser und dauerhafter ist als ein einzelnes Menschenleben.» Christian Waldvogels wissenschaftliche Herangehensweise formt aus zyklischen Verflechtungen von Assoziation, Analyse und Recherche sein vielschichtiges Werk auf inhaltlich und formal-ästhetisch höchstem Niveau.
Im Sommer 2013 werden zwei von der NASA ausgesandte Sonden den endgültigen wissenschaftlichen Beweis für oder gegen die Existenz Antichthons liefern. Ein Jahr zuvor begeben wir uns unbefangen in Waldvogels Interpretation dieser in der Antike entstandenen Idee.
Christian Waldvogel, 1971 in Austin USA geboren, lebt und arbeitet in Zürich. Er studierte Architektur an der ETH Zürich und an der Rhode Island School of Design, USA. Seine Arbeit wurde mit verschiedenen Preisen ausgezeichnet und an zahlreichen Ausstellungen und Vorträgen im In- und Ausland vorgestellt. Die beiden Monographien ‹Globus Cassus› und ‹Earth Extremes› wurden mit internationalen Designpreisen bedacht. Herrmann Germann Contemporary is delighted to
announce Christian Waldvogel’s solo exhibition ‹Antichthon — A Possibly Discredited Theory, and Thus a Paradise Less›.
Antichthon (the Greek word for ‹Counter-Earth›) is a hypothetical body of the solar system that was first described by the Greek philosopher Philolaos in 500 BC, in order to keep in balance the concept of the universe propagated at the time. Over the millenia, the controversial notion of the Counter-Earth has been numerously corrected.
For Christian Waldvogel, Antichthon represents the periodic coming and going of worldviews, the abandoning of theories, the discarding of ideas, the changing of convictions, and the concomitant loss of paradise. 2’500 years ago, Antichthon was pictured as opulent, ideal, and fertile. In the course of time, this notion has become greatly superfluous. For if Antichthon does indeed exist, then it is no larger than an asteroid. And thus the Garden of Eden contracts into a rock devoid of life, air, and vegetation.
Waldvogel’s installation ‹Antichthon — A Possibly Discredited Theory, and Thus a Paradise Less› transcends the confines of space and individual media, and invites the observer into an environment consisting of an array of experimental arrangements, objects, projections, and images. ‹Contre-jour›, a video artwork produced in 2012, forms a lock or passageway between Earth and Counter-Earth. The video shows the sun, filmed at Spitsbergen, where it never sets. The camera is directed incessantly toward the sun, which has concealed Antichthon’s alleged location since time immemorial. What emerges from this work is a spatial and associative separation, which, from a remote external vantage point, zooms in on details now lying within tangible reach.
«I attempt to get to the bottom of things and thus to find the root of the matter, be it artistic, conceptual, or mathematical. What interests me is the bigger picture, which is greater and more permanent than individual life.» Christian Waldvogel’s scientific approach crafts a complex work, of outstanding substance and utmost formal-aesthetic quality, from the cyclical interlacing of associations, analysis, and research.
In the summer of 2013, two NASA probes will provide the definitive scientific evidence either affirming or refuting Antichthon’s existence. A year prior to this event, the forthcoming show at Hermann Germann Contemporary offers visitors the opportunity to uninhibitedly encounter Waldvogel’s interpretation of an ancient idea.
