Herrmann Germann Contemporary freut sich ausserordentlich, ‹Déjà–vu› — die zweite Galerieausstellung von Gregory Polony ankündigen zu dürfen. Nach ‹Début›, Polonys erster Präsentation und der gleichzeitigen Eröffnung der Galerie vor zwei Jahren, wird ‹Déjà–vu› in mehrfacher Hinsicht installativ als Situation thematisiert, nicht zuletzt im Umgang und der Weiterverarbeitung des eigenen Werks.
Künstlerische Produktionen betrachtet Polony als wieder- und weiterverwendbares Material. Abermals setzt er bestehende Arbeiten oder Elemente in anderer Weise ein und kontextualisiert sie damit neu. Das Werk des Künstlers ist Polony zufolge eine Konstruktion, die Stockwerk um Stockwerk in die Höhe gezogen, und vom Künstler verwaltet und verbunden wird. In der Ausstellung ‹Déjà–vu› nimmt er sich dem in Schichten aufgetragenen Werk an, das sich letztlich immer als Fassade, Oberfläche oder Kondensat offenbart.
Der Begriff ‹Kontext› steht für Zusammenhang oder Umgebung. Vorgänge, Gegenstände und Konzepte lassen sich in einen Kontext einbetten, der unmittelbaren Einfluss auf die Bedeutung nimmt. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschäftigt sich Gregory Polony auch in der aktuellen Ausstellung ‹Déjà–vu› mit Fragen nach den Bedingungen für die Entstehung von Kunst. Seine Fragestellungen kreisen um die Revue der eigenen künstlerischen Praxis, das Kunstsystem an sich und betreffen meist auch den umgebenden Raum und damit die Einbettung des Kunstwerkes. Raum und seine Begebenheiten versteht Polony als Ort an dem Kunst stattfindet und mit den Betrachtenden in Kontakt kommt.

Gregory Polony, 1984 in Payerne (CH) geboren, lebt und arbeitet in Zürich. Er hat an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste 2010 sein Studium in Fine Arts abgeschlossen. Herrmann Germann Contemporary is delighted to announce ‹Déjà–vu› — our second exhibition of young Swiss artist Gregory Polony. Following ‹Début›, Polony’s first exhibition at HGC, which also marked the opening of our gallery two years ago, ‹Déjà–vu› presents various installation-like works that manifoldly address the situational and site-specific, not least as regards the artist’s handling of and further use of his own work.
Artistic productions, for Polony, are material which the artist may re-use and continue to use. In ‹Déjà–vu›, he once again employs existing work or elements thereof afresh, and thus places such material in new contexts. The artist’s work is as such an edifice or structure erected floor after floor, continuously maintained and interrelated by the artist. ‹Déjà–vu› explores the work as what has been undertaken or applied layer after layer, and which ultimately manifests itself as a façade, surface, or condensate.
The term ‹context› denotes a connection, interrelationship, or surrounding environment. Processes, objects, and concepts can be embedded within a context, which in turn directly affects meaning. Against this background, Polony’s ‹Déjà–vu› is concerned with the conditions under which art emerges. The works on display thus centre on reviewing both his own artistic practice and the art system. They mostly concern the space surrounding his work and, by further implication, its embedding. For Polony, space and its particular circumstances are the site where art occurs and where it comes into contact with the viewer.

Gregory Polony was born in Payerne (Switzerland) in 1984. He graduated from Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) in 2010 with a degree in Fine Arts. Previous exhibitions include Catch of the Year (2012/2011), Herrmann Germann Contemporary (2012/2011), Message Salon Downtown Zürich (2010), Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (2010), Auguststrasse Berlin (2010), Artachement Basel (2010), Galerie Haas & Fischer Zürich (2009). Mostly recently, he was a nominee for the Kunst12 ZKB Kunstpreis Zürich (2012). He lives and works in Zurich.
