Debut ist der Titel der Einzelausstellung des jungen Schweizer Künstlers Gregory Polony, und bezeichnet zugleich den Start der neu eröffneten Galerie Herrmann Germann Contemporary.
Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung steht der Umgang und die Interpretation der Skulptur an sich. In Gregory Polonys medienübergreifendem, teils ortsspezifischem Werk bedient er sich bisher einer reduzierten Materialpalette aus Vorgefundenem, Beton, Holzplatten und Spanngurten.
Seine konzeptionelle Arbeitsweise ist ebenfalls geprägt von intuitiven und überraschenden Momenten, die er mittels Zeichnung und Fotografie einbringt.
Während die Fotografie eine interpretierende Perspektive zeigt, beschreibt die Zeichnung einen fiktiven Zustand in Polonys Arbeiten. «Zeichnungen sind vordergründig einfach, schnell und effizient. Die Ideen bestehen im Vorfeld, deren Darstellung mittels Stift und Hand sind jedoch nicht kontrollierbar. Diese Unkontrollierbarkeit und Spontanität ermöglicht die Überraschung und öffnet dadurch neue Felder.»
Mit seinem Werk richtet er den Fokus auf den Kunstbetrieb selbst und hält, im Gegensatz zu rein konzeptuellen Ansätzen, an einer Sichtbarmachung fest. Polonys ‹in situ›-Arbeiten fordern die BetrachterInnen auf, die Umgebung der künstlerischen Arbeit miteinzubeziehen und eine Haltung zu entwickeln. Der jeweilige Präsentationsrahmen als Ausgangspunkt ist integriert.
Aus was besteht die Qualität eines Kunstwerks? Polony steht seiner Arbeit und der Kunst an sich kritisch gegenüber. «Das Wichtigste ist immer die Umsetzung, unabhängig vom Kontext in welchem eine Arbeit entsteht oder gezeigt wird. Der Punkt, an dem sich eine Arbeit finalisiert, aufgestellt wird, ist ein einmaliger Moment, der auch sofort wieder vergeht. Der Gedanke ‹done, next one› ist immer präsent.»
Wie sich ein Werk nach der Veröffentlichung und Kontextualisierung in neue Settings einbinden und weiterverarbeiten lässt, ist ein wesentlicher Aspekt von Polonys Arbeitsweise. – Tomas Germann

Gregory Polony, 1984 in Payerne (VD) geboren, lebt und arbeitet in Zürich. Er hat an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste 2010 sein Studium in Fine Arts abgeschlossen. Seine Arbeiten wurden unter anderem an folgenden Ausstellungsorten gezeigt: Message Salon Downtown Zürich (2010), Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (2010), Auguststrasse Berlin (2010), Artachement Basel (2010), Galerie Haas&Fischer Zürich (2009).

Im Zusammenhang mit der Ausstellung erscheint im Februar 2011 eine Publikation mit Text von Daniel Kurjakovic.

— About Gregory Polony

‹Debut› is the title of the solo exhibition of the young Swiss artist Gregory Polony, which also marks the opening of Herrmann Germann Contemporary.
The exhibition focuses on how we approach and interpret sculpture. Extending across various media, and partly site-specific, Gregory Polony’s work draws on a reduced palette of materials, including found objects, cement, wooden boards, and lashing belts.
His conceptual approach to sculpture is also shaped by intuitive and surprising moments, which he integrates into his works by means of drawings and photographs.
While the photographs show an interpretive perspective, the drawings describe a fictitious state in Polony’s works. «On the surface, the drawings are simple, quick, and efficient. While the ideas for them exist beforehand, their representation by means of a pen and the human hand are beyond control. Such uncontrollability and spontaneity enable surprise, and thereby open up new fields.»
Polony’s work centres on the art establishment and, unlike purely conceptual approaches, seeks to render it visible. His ‹in situ› work invites observers to integrate its surroundings and to develop a stance towards it. The context of presentation thereby functions as a starting point integral to the work.
What constitutes the quality of a work of art? Polony adopts a critical stance towards both his work and art. «Implementation is most important, irrespective of the context in which a particular work emerges or is shown. The point at which a work finalises itself and is mounted is a unique moment, one which also lapses immediately. The thought ‹done, next one› is forever present.»
How a work can be incorporated into and further developed in new settings after its publication and contextualisation is an essential aspect of Polony’s working method. – Tomas Germann

Gregory Polony, born in Payerne (VD) in 1984, lives and works in Zurich. He graduated from Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) in 2010 with a degree in Fine Arts. In connection with the exhibition, a publication with an essay by Daniel Kurjakovic will appear in February 2011.
