In perceiving an object, one occupies a separate space — one's own space. In perceiving architectural space, one's own space is not separate but coexistent with what is perceived. In the first case one surrounds; in the second, one is surrounded. Herrmann Germann Contemporary is delighted to announce Hint the Gap, the first solo exhibition of Swiss artist Markus Kummer. Kummer's work moves between sculpture, installation, and architecture. Central to his work is the sculptural potential of the built environment. Kummer's artistic gestures bring into relation art and space using few resources: he dispenses with glossy finishing and instead applies ordinary materials bearing the traces of everyday use. His spatial manifestations are fragments that emerge from his observations of daily life.
Kummer's work takes a keen interest in how space is experienced and how it can be designed to correspond to inner and outer circumstances, namely, the human being and the built environment as a fundamental duality. Kummer, however, does not understand architecture as an objective reality but as a visual fact springing from the human imagination. His work plays with the properties of its materials and the visual realities of the resulting structures. Under these conditions, Kummer creates moments and situations that stimulate the viewer's own images and recollections without, however, serving them as a concrete template. Characteristic of the works displayed, which have all been created especially for this exhibition, are various related concepts and themes: instability, stability, separation, connection, and almagamation. The works reflect Kummer's preoccupation with limits and delimination, in both a physical and psychological sense, as illustrated by several sculptures and moments consisting of stone and textile. As he puts it: “Textile is a flexible surface, both thing and construct, both visible and concealing, both formed and and shapeless, open to impulses.”
Markus Kummer was born in Neuheim, Switzerland in 1974. He graduated from Bern University of the Arts in 2011 with a Master of Fine Arts. Selected exhibitions: 2014 o.T. Herrmann Germann Contemporary freut sich ausserordentlich, Hint the Gap — die erste Galerie-Einzelausstellung von Markus Kummer anzukündigen. Kummers Arbeitsfeld bewegt sich zwischen Skulptur, Installation und Architektur. In seinem Werk nimmt das bildhauerische Potential bebauter Umgebung eine bezeichnende Rolle ein. Er setzt seine Gesten so, dass die Kunst und der Raum miteinander zusammenhängen. Kummer braucht dazu wenig. Er verzichtet auf hochglanzpolierte Ästhetik und setzt stattdessen gewöhnliche Materialien mit Gebrauchsspuren ein. Seine räumlichen Manifestationen sind Fragmente, die aufgrund seiner Beobachtungen aus der alltäglichen Umgebung entstehen.
Vorwiegend geht es darum, wie Raum erlebt und so gestaltet werden kann, dass sich die inneren und äusseren Verhältnisse entsprechen: der Mensch und das Gebaute als Dualität.
