The title of our forthcoming exhibition echoes the familiar English saying that ‹The proof of the pudding is in the eating!›. To really know what something tastes like, you need to try it yourself. This group show illuminates in the widest possible sense various uses of and approaches to materials, craftsmanship, and working processes. Intersecting in the works of the three artists gathered here are various themes, such as power, skill, being over- and underwhelmed, and an inclination to think beyond the material itself so as to employ it as a placeholder.
Simeon Cieslinski’s video work The Nutcracker and the Axeman (2013) embodies physical presence through absence. The wooden figure awakened to life in this work breathes audibly and visibly with increasing exertion to the point of climax. An everyday object, interpreted as ‹handmade›, is animated and enlivened using audio fragments from a YouTube clip. ‹How-to›, ‹DIY›, and ‹See here how to›: assembled in this work are countless clips of this peculiar genre, featuring predominantly men who can be heard praising craftsmanship and the age-old notion of man and nature. Under the guise of conveying artisanal skills, the viewer encounters absurd forms of self-celebration and self-performance.
Markus Kummer’s work occupies the space between sculpture, installation, and architecture. His site-specific Untitled (Shades of Time) (2013), exhibited at Kunsthaus Zug, brought onto a wall measuring 25m2 time in its most elementary form. Infinite, condensed layers of plaster, partly crumbling, recall natural sedimentation. Kummer’s work brings together physical effort, know-how, failure, and insight.
In his work, Andreas Marti investigates the visible presence of reality. Physical processes, natural phenomena, and mathematical systems kindle Marti’s interest and initiate a process that explores the possibilities of translating abstract circumstances into readable signs, figures of thought into tangible forms.


Simeon Cieslinski (born in Ashton Under-Lyne, UK in 1988) studied fine arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Akademie in Amsterdam, where he has been artist-at-residence at De Ateliers for the past two years. He was awarded the 2011 Gerrit Rietveld Fine Arts Prize and received a 2013 scholarship from the Mondriaan Fonds. He lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin.

Markus Kummer (born in Neuheim, CH in 1974) earned a Master of Fine Arts from Bern University of the Arts in 2011. Selected exhibitions: 2013 Kunsthaus Zug CH; 2013/2009 CAN, Neuchâtel CH; 2012 Swiss Art Awards; 2011 La Station, Nice FR; Kunsthaus Baselland CH; 2010 Marks Blond Project, Bern CH. He is a 2014 recipient of the Canton of Zug’s Berlin artist-in-residence award; he was awarded art scholarships by the Canton of Zug in 2010 and 2012. He lives and works in Zurich.

Andreas Marti (born in Zurich, CH in 1967) studied fine arts at the Schule für Gestaltung und Kunst Zürich CH. Der Titel bezieht sich auf das englische Zitat ‹The proof of the pudding is in the eating!›. Um wirklich zu wissen wie etwas schmeckt, musst Du es selbst ausprobieren. Die Gruppenausstellung beleuchtet im weitesten Sinn den Einsatz und Umgang von und mit Materialien, Handwerk und Verfahrensweisen. Aspekte wie Macht, Können, Über- und Unterforderung und den Hang über Material hinauszudenken, es als Platzhalter benutzen, sind Überschneidungen im Werk der drei Künstler.
Simeon Cieslinskis Videoarbeit The Nutcracker and the Axeman 2013 verkörpert physisches Dasein durch Absenz. Die zum Leben erweckte Holzfigur atmet akkustisch und visuell mit zunehmender Anstrengung bis zum Höhepunkt. Ein als ‹von Hand gemacht› ausgelegter Gebrauchs­gegenstand, animiert und belebt mit Audiofragmenten aus einem Youtube Clip. ‹How-to›, ‹DIY› und ‹Hier wird gezeigt wie› — in unzähligen Clips dieses sonderbaren Genres sind vorwiegend Männer portraitiert, die das Handwerk und die Idee Mensch-Natur lobpreisen. Unter dem Deckmantel der Vermittlung von handwerklichen Fähigkeiten finden sich absurde Formen der Selbstzelebrierung und Selbstdarstellung.
Markus Kummers Werk oszilliert im Zwischenbereich von Skulptur, Install­ation und Architektur. Mit der ortsspezifischen Arbeit Untitled (Shades of Time) 2013 im Kunsthaus Zug manifestierte Kummer auf 25 m2 Wand­fläche Zeit in Elementarform. Unzählige verdichtete Schichten aus Gips, teilweise abbröckelnd, erinnern an natürliche Sedimentationen. Körper­licher Einsatz, Know-how, Scheitern und Erkenntnis sind Ingredienzien in Markus Kummers Werk.
Andreas Martis Arbeiten untersuchen ein sichtbares Vorhandensein von Wirklichkeit. Physikalische Vorgänge, Naturphänomene und mathematische Systeme wecken Martis Interesse und setzen einen Prozess in Gang, welcher die Möglichkeiten auslotet, wie abstrakte Sachverhalte in lesbare Zeichen, Gedankengebilde in erfahrbare Formen übersetzt werden können.
